Bring Your Own Bag! Sustainable Swap for when you Shop!

Bring Your Own Bag! Sustainable Swap for when you Shop!

BYOB! No, I’m not talking about beer, I’m talking bags! BRING YOUR OWN BAG! Did you know>>> Americans use about 100 billion plastic shopping bags a year!? While that number is 🤯 mind blowing on its own, that’s just America. It’s estimated that 500 billion to 1 TRILLION single use plastic bags are used every year world wide. 🌎 According to the Center for Marine Conversation, plastic bags are one of the MOST common items of trash found polluting our oceans. 🌊🐠 Now, some countries have already banned single use plastic bags, hopefully the US and other countries will follow suit in the near future but for now, it’s up to us the consumers to change that fact. This is another swap that was just super duper easy to accomplish. It took me a few trips to remember to keep these bags in my car, but as with any new habit the more you do it the more easily it becomes second nature. You can find/thrift bags anywhere. Most grocery stores sell reusable bags, I have a few of those but as thrifting is my jam, i’ve been keeping my eyes out for second hand canvas bags. They are durable, easy to toss in the wash, and hold up for many many years. I got the floral canvas bag picturer for just $1 at my local thrift store and love it! Buying second hand will always be my go too, but if you’re not having any luck at your local thrift stores, consider looking into bags made by companies that share your values. Even if you decide to use that ever so convenient prime account and buy off Amazon, you can still research the “seller” and learn a little more about their business first! Another great benifit I didn’t anticipate, people actually take notice of my BYOB status. Just the other day, I had a woman behind me in the grocery store line, say “I really need to do that too, where did you get that bag?” Then I had an opportunity to promote second hand, reusable and sustainable shopping. It was pretty dope.🤘 Small steps>> it’s very easy to get overwhelmed when you decide to start living more sustainability. Just take things one day at a time and start with the easy stuff, bringing your own bags with you when you shop is an simple step in the right direction.😁
